Ellenton, decoded: One genuinely historic stop: the only surviving antebellum plantation mansion in South Florida, with real Civil War history and columned Greek Revival architecture.
The one thing to know: Where a giant outlet mall sits a mile from a Civil War-era mansion.
The ranked list
Ca' d'Zan
John and Mable Ringling's 56-room winter palace, finished in 1926 on the edge of Sarasota Bay.
John Ringling built a 36,000-square-foot, 56-room Mediterranean revival mansion and filled it with the Roaring Twenties; architect Dwight James Baum finished it in 1926 after two years of construction. This was the Ringlings' winter residence and the social hub of 1920s Sarasota, and it still sits on the bay it was built to show off. Admission bundles the whole Ringling estate.
🗝️ Insider: Do Ca' d'Zan first thing, then retreat to the air-conditioned galleries when the afternoon heat lands.
5401 Bay Shore Rd, Sarasota, FL 34243, USA
Sunshine Skyway Bridge
The cable-stayed landmark over Tampa Bay's mouth — its predecessor lives on as a 24-hour fishing pier.
Crossing it is the attraction: a cable-stayed span rising over the southern mouth of Tampa Bay. The original bridge, partially felled by a freighter strike in 1980, wasn't demolished — its approaches became Skyway Fishing Pier State Park in 1994, open around the clock with bait and tackle sold on the span. Few landmarks let you drive the new one and fish the old one.
🗝️ Insider: You don't need to pack gear — shops on the pier sell bait, tackle, snacks and drinks.
7508-7534 Sunshine Skyway Lane South, St. Petersburg, FL 33711, USA
Emerson Point Preserve
A 1,200-year-old temple mound and a tower with Sunshine Skyway views over Terra Ceia Bay.
Climb the Portavant Temple Mound, a 1,200-year-old Safety Harbor site on the National Register of Historic Places, then take the observation tower for a clean line across Terra Ceia Bay to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The mangrove kayak launch puts you onto the Blueway Trail's tunnels without an outfitter. Open sunrise to sunset, every day of the year.
🗝️ Insider: Paddle the mangrove Blueway Trail from the kayak launch with the wooden dock — the tunnels are the preserve's quiet showpiece.
