Lettuce Lake Park
Open since 1982 on the Hillsborough River, Lettuce Lake Park is 240 acres of genuine Florida wetland: boardwalks winding through cypress domes and floodplain, an observation tower over the marsh, nature trails, and an Audubon center. It's where Tampa goes to see herons, turtles, and the occasional gator without leaving the city — a quiet, cheap nature break.
A 3,500-foot boardwalk through cypress wetlands along the Hillsborough River, where alligators, herons, ibis and turtles are genuinely common rather than theoretically possible. Twenty minutes from downtown, another century.

Climb the observation tower first thing — it's the best vantage over the river marsh, and the birds are most active early.
