The Bends
The Bends calls itself a "classy dive," and for once the phrase earns it: bartenders who'll build you a proper sazerac at dive-bar prices, a narrow room lit low and hung with a Tom Selleck portrait and an incongruous crystal chandelier, and a back room where free shows run through rap, punk, hardcore, indie, and electronic most nights of the week. It's for people who want their night to have some grit and surprise to it — the adventurous underground, as the owners put it. If you want bottle service, a dress code, or a clean sightline to a DJ booth, this is the wrong door; the whole point is that it isn't polished.
A weeknight when a band's booked in the back — Whiskey Wednesdays or a UNFUN emo night are the sweet spot. Shows are usually free, the crowd is regulars-plus-diehards rather than a weekend bar crawl, and the small room hits its sweaty, packed peak somewhere around 10-11 PM.
Don't just use the bathroom — the mural in there has its own Instagram (@bendsbathroom). And don't park just anywhere near the lot; regulars warn about aggressive towing, so leave your car on a legit public street and walk in.
