Neal Preserve

A half-mile of shell and boardwalk past reconstructed mounds. The Smithsonian excavated the originals in the 1930s; the county dates habitation here from 3000 BC to 1400 AD. A 120-acre coastal walk off the Anna Maria bridge — mangrove, salt tern, oak hammock, a 20-foot tower, and reconstructed burial mounds the county calls an open-air museum.
