De Soto National Memorial: Bradenton's Free National Park Site
At the mouth of the Manatee River, De Soto National Memorial marks where Hernando de Soto's expedition came ashore in 1539 and began the first major European trek into the American South. It's one of the National Park Service's smallest units and one of Florida's best free outings: mangrove-tunnel trails, ranger programs, and a shoreline made for slow afternoons.
1. The mangrove shoreline trail
A short nature trail loops through mangrove tunnels and along the river where the expedition landed — shady, flat, and genuinely pretty at high tide.
Insider tip: Go at high tide for the mangrove-tunnel effect; low tide trades it for wading birds on the flats.
Open in Wayfind2. Camp Uzita's living history
In the winter season, rangers and volunteers in period kit demonstrate 16th-century weapons, armor, and camp life at the recreated Camp Uzita — history you can smell (the campfire) rather than read.
Insider tip: The living-history season runs roughly December into spring; check the park's calendar before making it the day's centerpiece.
Open in Wayfind3. Pair it with Robinson Preserve
The memorial sits minutes from Robinson Preserve's flats, towers, and kayak trails — together they make Bradenton's best free outdoor half-day.
Insider tip: Memorial first for the shade and history, preserve after for the miles.

Does De Soto National Memorial cost anything?
No — admission and parking are free. It's one of the few national park sites with no entrance fee at all.
How much time do I need?
An hour covers the trail and visitor center; add another for ranger programs in the winter living-history season.
Can you kayak there?
The shoreline sits on the Manatee River near marked paddling routes, and adjacent Robinson Preserve has dedicated kayak trails and launches.
