North Beach At Fort DeSoto Park

Dr. Beach, the researcher behind the annual U.S. beach rankings, named this beach America's best in 2005. Nearly three miles of white sand run along the park's north tip, part of 1,136 acres spanning five islands and over seven miles of waterfront.

Go on a weekday — weekends make it hard to find open stretches of sand, especially near the picnic shelters.

Hike south past the shorebird sanctuary toward the pier — that stretch stays quieter than the crowded north end.
